Mack Attack Derailed? Chargers’ Defense Braces for Life Without Star Pass Rusher
The Los Angeles Chargers, riding high on a 2-0 start after a dominant 20-9 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, face a daunting challenge. Their defensive cornerstone, Khalil Mack, suffered a dislocated elbow during Monday night’s game, leaving a gaping hole in their pass rush and overall defensive prowess. The question now is: Can the Chargers’ defense maintain its elite level without the nine-time Pro Bowler?
The Injury and its Immediate Impact
The injury occurred late in the first quarter when Mack’s arm bent back awkwardly while assisting on a tackle of Raiders wide receiver Tre Tucker. Mack, who already had a sack in the game, was visibly in pain and immediately headed to the locker room. The Chargers initially listed him as questionable but later ruled him out for the remainder of the contest.
Coach Jim Harbaugh described the injury as “one of the toughest things I’ve ever seen,” praising Mack’s toughness and resilience. Fortunately for the Chargers, the injury isn’t season-ending. However, Mack has been placed on injured reserve and will miss at least the next four games.
The Void Left by Mack
Khalil Mack’s impact on the Chargers’ defense extends far beyond statistics. Since joining the team in 2022, he has been a disruptive force, racking up 31 sacks in his first three seasons. In 2023, he recorded a stellar 17 sacks. His presence commands double teams, freeing up opportunities for other pass rushers. Beyond his on-field performance, Mack is a respected leader in the locker room, setting a high standard for his teammates.
“Mack is more than just his 108.5 career sacks or his nine Pro Bowl selections. He’s the kind of player who shifts an entire locker room’s standard,” Fredo Cervantes of The Sporting Tribune noted.
In-House Replacements: Next Man Up
With Mack sidelined, the Chargers must rely on their depth and the development of younger players. Several players are poised to step up and fill the void:
- Tuli Tuipulotu: The second-year player is expected to take on the “lion’s share” of Mack’s snaps. Tuipulotu had a strong rookie season and has shown flashes of elite potential. In the win against the Raiders, Tuipulotu played 52 or 54 snaps, recording six quarterback pressures, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.
- Bud Dupree: Signed in the offseason, Dupree brings veteran experience and physicality to the Chargers’ pass rush. He will likely step into a starting role in Mack’s absence.
- Kyle Kennard: The rookie fourth-round pick has been inactive for the first two games but could now see increased playing time. Harbaugh mentioned that Mack’s absence presents an opportunity for Kennard to prove himself.
- Caleb Murphy: Murphy has seen limited action but played his most snaps of his career against the Raiders.
Potential Free Agent Additions
The Chargers are also exploring external options to bolster their pass-rushing depth. They recently worked out veteran edge defenders Clelin Ferrell and Rashad Weaver.
- Clelin Ferrell: A former top-five pick, Ferrell offers veteran experience and versatility.
- Rashad Weaver: Weaver brings youth and potential to the table.
Defensive Scheme Adjustments
Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will need to make adjustments to compensate for Mack’s absence. Minter has implemented a scheme that features a mix of simulated pressures and calculated blitzes. He’ll need to find ways to generate pressure without Mack’s consistent presence on the edge.
Daiyan Henley has emerged as a disruptive force at linebacker. His ability to “hit, run, and cover” makes him a valuable asset in Minter’s scheme. Derwin James Jr.’s versatility allows Minter to deploy him in various roles, including as a pass rusher and in coverage.
The Importance of the Secondary
The Chargers’ secondary has been a strength of the defense. Against the Raiders, the Chargers had seven players with multiple passes defensed. Donte Jackson, Tony Jefferson, and Daiyan Henley each recorded an interception.
With less pressure on opposing quarterbacks, the secondary’s ability to cover and create turnovers will be even more critical.
The Road Ahead
The Chargers face a challenging stretch of games without Mack. They will host the Denver Broncos in Week 3, followed by games against the Giants, Commanders, and Dolphins. These games will test the depth and resilience of the Chargers’ defense.
Despite the setback, the Chargers remain confident in their ability to compete at a high level. “The expectation is that Tuipulotu, Dupree, and others will step up,” Cervantes wrote. “But make no mistake: Mack’s leadership will still be felt, even if he’s on the sideline in street clothes.”
The Chargers’ defense has proven to be stingy, ranking among the league’s best in points allowed. They will need to maintain that level of performance to stay atop the AFC West.
