Kelce’s Fumbles: Is the Chiefs’ Star Tight End Losing His Edge?
The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a rocky start in the 2025 season, sitting at 0-2. While Patrick Mahomes continues to display his brilliance, a critical question looms over the team: Is Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ stalwart tight end, losing his edge? After a Super Bowl LIX rematch, the Philadelphia Eagles narrowly defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 20-17, fueled by a crucial Travis Kelce fumble and a Jalen Hurts touchdown.
A Costly Mistake Against the Eagles
In the Chiefs’ recent loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, a costly fumble by Kelce proved to be a turning point. With the Chiefs trailing 13-10 in the fourth quarter, Mahomes connected with Kelce near the goal line. However, the pass slipped through Kelce’s fingers and into the hands of Eagles safety Andrew Mukuba. This interception not only thwarted a potential go-ahead touchdown but also led to an Eagles score, extending their lead and ultimately sealing the Chiefs’ fate.
Skip Bayless didn’t hold back, stating, “Travis Kelce dropped the game at Arrowhead. The reason the Chiefs lost is because Travis Kelce dropped a touchdown pass at the goalline that I believe would’ve put the Chiefs in a position to win the football game.”
Kelce’s Perspective
Kelce himself has taken responsibility for the miscue. “Gotta catch the ball,” Kelce said on Wednesday’s edition of the New Heights podcast. “Gotta catch the ball.” He acknowledged the play “cost us bigtime,” but expressed confidence in his ability to fix the issue.
A Decline in Production?
While Kelce remains a key target in the Chiefs’ offense, his recent performance has raised concerns about a potential decline. In 2024, Kelce finished the regular season with 97 receptions for 823 yards and just three touchdowns, both the lowest marks of any season (except his rookie season) in which he played at least 16 games. In the 2025 playoffs, Kelce managed just 13 catches for 165 yards and one touchdown across three games, including only four catches for 39 yards in the Super Bowl against Philadelphia.
NFL analyst Rich Eisen believes Kelce’s performance in 2025 could decide whether the Chiefs keep their dynasty alive or begin their slow slide into decline. “He will be the avatar. He will be the focus as to whether the Chiefs are finally vulnerable,” said Eisen.
The Impact of Offseason Endeavors
Kelce has acknowledged that his increased focus on off-field ventures may have contributed to a slight dip in his performance. “I think it might have slipped a little bit because I did have a little bit more focus in trying to set myself up. And opportunities came up where I was excited to venture into a new world of acting and being an entertainer,” Kelce told GQ magazine. However, he insists that his “work ethic is such that I have so much pride in how I do things that I never want the product to tail off, and I feel like these past two years haven’t been to my standard.”
The Chiefs’ Offensive Struggles
Kelce’s struggles are not the sole reason for the Chiefs’ offensive woes. Patrick Mahomes has openly acknowledged the offense’s struggles and the need for improvement. “Our defense has been great these last few years. Offensively, we have to be able to match that intensity and match that level of play,” Mahomes stated.
The Chiefs’ offense has struggled to stretch the field vertically and horizontally, and the running game has been largely ineffective. The absence of key receivers, including the suspended Rashee Rice, has further compounded the challenges.
Can Kelce Rebound?
Despite the recent struggles, it’s too early to write off Travis Kelce. He remains one of the most talented tight ends in the NFL, and his connection with Patrick Mahomes is undeniable. Kelce has a proven track record of overcoming adversity, and he’s determined to silence the doubters.
With Rashee Rice still serving a six-game suspension, the team needs Kelce to step up. And while he led the team in receiving, he only tallied 61 yards and no touchdowns. Other than Kelce, Mahomes now has to throw to guys like Marquise Brown, Tyquan Thornton, and JuJu Smith-Schuster. It’s a below-average receiving corps, and with Kelce’s lack of stepping up, one has to think that Mahomes is getting frustrated.
The Road Ahead
The Chiefs face a tough road ahead, with upcoming games against the Giants, Ravens, Jaguars, and Lions. The return of suspended players and the emergence of new offensive weapons will be crucial for revitalizing the team’s offense.
As for Travis Kelce, he’s focused on regaining his edge and leading the Chiefs back to Super Bowl contention. “I just have such a motivation to show up this year for my guys,” Kelce said. Whether he can recapture his prime form remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Kelce will give it his all to prove that he’s still one of the best in the game.
