Broncos’ Gamble: Can Bo Nix Live Up to the Hype in His Debut 2025 Season?

The Denver Broncos took a calculated risk when they selected Bo Nix in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. After years of searching for a franchise quarterback since Peyton Manning’s retirement, the Broncos and Head Coach Sean Payton are betting that Nix can be the answer. Now, as the 2025 season approaches, the question on everyone’s mind is: Can Bo Nix live up to the hype and lead the Broncos back to Super Bowl contention?

Nix’s Promising Rookie Season

Bo Nix’s rookie season in 2024 was, by most accounts, a success. He started all 17 games, leading the Broncos to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth as the No. 7 seed in the AFC. Nix set a Broncos’ franchise record for most wins by a rookie quarterback, surpassing John Elway (1983) and Drew Lock (2019). His 29 touchdown passes were the second-most by a rookie in NFL history, just two behind Justin Herbert (2020). He threw for 3,775 yards and rushed for another 430.

According to 9News, Nix said in an interview, “Everybody is going to go out there and play their number of games and everybody is going to compete to win. And so it really comes down to which team is closer, which team is going to execute well, which team is going to pull the tough games out and find ways to win the close ones.”

High Expectations for 2025

Nix’s impressive rookie campaign has led to heightened expectations for the 2025 season. CBS Sports reports that Nix himself isn’t shying away from these expectations. “The expectations are definitely higher, but we like that … that means you’re a good football team,” Nix said from training camp. “That means you have something to play for. We’ve put together a really good football team. We’ve added some pieces on both sides of the football. We really feel like in all three phases of the game we’ve gotten better this offseason.”

These expectations largely rest on Nix’s shoulders. For eight consecutive seasons, including one with Sean Payton as head coach, the Broncos posted a losing record entering 2024. For nine years in a row, the Broncos didn’t reach the playoffs. Then Nix was selected by Denver in the first round of the 2024 draft, started all 17 games at quarterback, and the Broncos busted both skids, finishing 10-7 and qualifying for the AFC playoffs as the No. 7 and final seed.

Nix’s Development and Leadership

Entering his second year, Nix is focused on improving his game and becoming a better leader. He spent time this offseason with Drew Brees, Payton’s former star quarterback, to further develop his craft. Nix told CBS Sports that he’s returned more comfortable with Denver’s system and is no longer drinking from a firehose like he did as a first-year player. “I feel like I’m a lot further,” Nix said. “Just spitting out play calls [is] a lot easier, and processing. … It’s a lot better. It’s a lot more enjoyable not thinking right now as opposed to what I was doing last year. It’s fun. It’s fun to be in the know. “It’s fun to have a little bit more of an understanding of what’s going on so I can be a little bit more beneficial to others and help them out along the way. I feel good. We’re in a good spot.”

Tight end Adam Trautman has noticed a significant difference in Nix’s leadership. “Confidence? He was good last year, but he’s a much better leader this year,” Trautman said. “You can understand it – you’re a rookie coming in and even though he’s a first-round pick and he’s a quarterback, he’s probably going to be a starter, you don’t want to be the guy who comes in and is vocal and is, ‘I’m the guy.’ Because you might develop a bad relationship with your position or other guys might look at you a certain way. “So he let it all develop. But now, he is ‘The Guy.’ He’s more vocal. Which is perfect. He’s going to have an awesome season.”

Offensive Weapons and Strategy

The Broncos have made several key additions to their offense to support Nix. They signed tight end Evan Engram in free agency, adding a reliable receiving threat. They also drafted running back RJ Harvey, who is expected to contribute immediately. JK Dobbins looks healthy and capable of bringing an edge to the run game, like Mark Ingram once did in New Orleans, and rookie R.J. Harvey will be an interesting chess piece for Payton to deploy.

According to Sports Illustrated, Harvey and the Las Vegas Raiders’ sixth-overall draft pick Ashton Jeanty were the two most explosive running backs in college football last year, which was a big reason why Payton coveted both. Throw in Harvey’s upside as a potential ‘joker’ out of the backfield — a pass-catching running back who can create mismatches — and the rookie’s ceiling is so high, you have to squint.

The Broncos’ offensive line is also a strength, with all five starters returning from last season. This unit, featuring Garett Bolles, Ben Powers, Luke Wattenberg, Quinn Meinerz, and Mike McGlinchey, is one of the highest-paid in the NFL and is expected to provide excellent protection for Nix. In 2024, the Broncos led the NFL in both pass block win rate (73.8%) and run block win rate (74.9%).

Challenges and Concerns

Despite the optimism surrounding Nix, there are still some challenges and concerns. The Broncos play in a tough division with the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers. According to CBS Sports, the Chiefs are the favorites in the division at -120 at DraftKings, ahead of the Broncos (+300) and Los Angeles Chargers (+310).

Another concern is the development of the Broncos’ receiving corps beyond Courtland Sutton. While Sutton is a reliable target, the Broncos need other receivers to step up and provide Nix with more options.

Nix’s Potential

Bo Nix has the potential to be a franchise quarterback for the Denver Broncos. He has the arm talent, athleticism, and work ethic to succeed in the NFL. With a strong supporting cast and a coach like Sean Payton, Nix has the opportunity to develop into one of the league’s top quarterbacks.

NFL.com reports that the former first-round pick is an ideal signal-caller in Sean Payton’s offense, owning accuracy and athleticism. He also can spray the ball to different levels. If you checked out on Nix’s rookie campaign after his four interceptions in the first two weeks, you missed watching a young passer develop in real time. After the rocky start, Nix settled into Payton’s scheme — making the right reads, no longer forcing balls into traffic — and began to understand how defenses were trying to attack him. The type of development Nix showed during the course of the season portends big things in Year 2.

The Verdict

The Broncos took a gamble on Bo Nix, but it’s a gamble that could pay off in a big way. Nix showed promise as a rookie, and with continued development and the support of a strong team, he has the potential to lead the Broncos back to Super Bowl contention. The 2025 season will be a crucial test for Nix, as he looks to prove that he can live up to the hype and become the franchise quarterback the Broncos have been searching for.
