Skattebo’s Versatility: Giants’ Rookie RB Proving to Be a Dual-Threat Offensive Spark
The New York Giants’ 2025 season has been a rollercoaster, but one bright spot has emerged from the backfield: rookie running back Cam Skattebo. Drafted in the fourth round (105th overall) of the 2025 NFL Draft from Arizona State, Skattebo is quickly proving his worth as a versatile weapon in the Giants’ offense. Through the first three weeks, Skattebo has become a fan favorite, showcasing a blend of power running and receiving skills that have caught the attention of fans and analysts alike.
From Rio Linda to the NFL: Skattebo’s Journey
Before electrifying NFL crowds, Cameron Skattebo was a standout at Rio Linda High School in California. Despite a stellar high school career where he rushed for 3,550 yards and 45 touchdowns during his junior year, Skattebo only received one Division I offer from Sacramento State. He then transferred to Arizona State, where his national profile grew significantly.
Skattebo’s journey to the NFL wasn’t conventional. After Sac State canceled its 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Skattebo found himself buried on the depth chart. However, he persevered, eventually becoming the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year in 2022 after rushing for 1,372 yards and seven touchdowns. His success at Sacramento State led him to Arizona State, where he continued to impress, ultimately leading to his selection by the Giants in the 2025 NFL Draft.
A Dual-Threat Dynamo
Skattebo’s versatility is what sets him apart. In Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs, he led the team in both rushing (60 yards) and receiving (61 yards), becoming only the eighth rookie in Giants history to achieve 60+ rushing yards and 60+ receiving yards in the same game. He also scored the Giants’ only touchdown of the game, his second of the season.
According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Skattebo is currently the highest-graded running back in the NFL through Week 3. He also ranks in the top two in PFF rushing (84.7) and receiving grades (81.9). Skattebo has turned 23 carries into 102 yards, gaining seven first downs, scoring twice and forcing eight missed tackles. As a receiver, he has caught 10 of 13 passes for 87 yards, with four first downs and three forced three missed tackles.
Filling a Void in the Giants’ Offense
Skattebo’s emergence comes at a crucial time for the Giants. The team has struggled to find consistency on offense, and Skattebo’s ability to contribute both as a runner and receiver provides a much-needed spark. With starting running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. sidelined due to a dislocated shoulder, Skattebo is poised to take on an even larger role in the offense.
“We thought Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo would be used in some short-yardages and special packages, but last week 35 snaps, 52% of the plays from the offense for the Giants,” reported Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. “The most among any running backs. Look for him to get even more tonight against the Chiefs and moving forward. Skattebo has taken the lead in that backfield.”
Skattebo’s Impact Beyond the Stats
Skattebo’s impact extends beyond the stat sheet. Head coach Brian Daboll has praised Skattebo’s energy and toughness, noting the positive impact he has on the team’s locker room. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has also lauded Skattebo’s downhill running style.
Skattebo’s ability to pick up blitzes and contribute in pass protection has also impressed coaches and analysts. In the modern NFL, a running back’s ability to protect the quarterback is crucial, and Skattebo’s proficiency in this area has allowed him to quickly earn the trust of the coaching staff and quarterback Russell Wilson.
A Bright Future for Skattebo and the Giants
Cam Skattebo’s emergence as a dual-threat offensive weapon has been one of the most exciting developments for the New York Giants in the 2025 season. His blend of power running, receiving skills, and pass protection abilities makes him a valuable asset to the team. As he continues to develop and gain experience, Skattebo has the potential to become a cornerstone of the Giants’ offense for years to come.
